Scanship - Waste management

Scanship, based in Norway, produces advanced wastewater purification and waste management systems for ferries, cruise ships, disaster relief and merchant shipping, as well as land-based waste management systems. Scanship is a cruise industry leader in advanced wastewater purification, and every second cruise ship delivered to the market in the period between 2014 and 2020 is equipped with Scanship Advanced Wastewater Purification (AWP). Scanship AWP has been and will be installed on 42 of total 75 newbuilds during this 7-year period.

Scanship will develop an innovative dryer that can work with both SHS (Superheated Steam Drying) as well as with MVR technology (Mechanical Vapour Recompression Technology) system developed within DryFiciency. The main benefit of this MVR dryer lies in its design for large temperature differences enabling it to recover and upgrade usable process heat without increasing the CO2 footprint of the dryer. Target supply temperatures of up to 150oC for steam drying processes are targeted. Furthermore, the SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) is reduced significantly making the process carbon-neutral depending on the electricity mix of the production site.

Scanship will demonstrate the MVR system (open loop) developed within DryFiciency in a land-based waste management system at Lindum A/S in Drammen (Norway) for bio-sludge drying. The demonstration unit utilizes steam up to 1 ton per hour which results in a capacity of up to 500 kW. The turbo-compressors by Rotrex are oil-free and therefore without lubrication. The successful demo case aims at reducing the dryer’s energy demand by up to 75% and at eliminating the need of the drying system to depend on fossil fuels. Water is a natural refrigerant, which is non-toxic, environmentally-safe, reliable and has no global warming potential. It will therefore not be subject to future regulations.

Scanship will add a huge potential for this technology to the cruise industry, in land-based waste management, in the biogas market as well as in fish farming industry.
